Fire Safety Tips
1. Install Smoke Alarms
- Place smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside
each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
- Test monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
2. Plan & Practice an Escape Plan
- Create a fire escape plan with two
ways out of every room.
- Practice the plan twice a year with all
family members.
- Designate a meeting spot outside, away from the house.
3. Be Careful with Cooking
- Never leave the kitchen while cooking,
especially when using high heat.
- Keep flammable objects (towels, curtains) away
from the stove.
- Turn pot handles inward to prevent accidents.
4. Use Heaters and Electrical Devices Safely
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from
anything that can burn.
- Turn off heaters when leaving the room or
sleeping.
- Donβt overload electrical outlets; use surge
protectors.
5. Maintain Appliances
- Clean lint from the dryer after each use.
- Have HVAC systems and chimneys inspected
annually.
- Unplug appliances when not in use.
6. Store Flammable Items Safely
- Keep gasoline, paint, and other flammables in
approved containers and outside the living area.
- Never smoke near flammable materials.
7. Practice Candle Safety
- Use flameless candles when possible.
- Keep candles away from anything flammable and
never leave them unattended.
8. Install Fire Extinguishers
- Place a multi-purpose fire extinguisher in the
kitchen, garage, and basement.
- Learn how to use it: PASS β Pull,
Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
9. Teach Kids Fire Safety
- Teach children not to play with matches,
lighters, or electrical outlets.
- Show them how to crawl low under smoke and to
βStop, Drop, and Rollβ if clothes catch fire.
10. Know What to Do if Thereβs a Fire
- Get out and stay out; never go back
into a burning building.
- Call 911 from outside.
- If smoke is present, stay low to avoid
inhaling it.
